Busting the Dirty Hair Myth

We’re all guilty of it when we notice that appointment approaching. Forgoing the overdue shower that our hair desperately needs…

We add a few more dashes of dry shampoo. We spritz a little perfume in our strands to prolong the freshness. All because someone, somewhere claims the dirtiness contributes to our service. A better color, successful process, or it’s simply more protective for our hair. Who is this someone, and how does their nonsensical claim of dirty hair seem to stick so well? Well I would love to sit and have a chat with them and explain the kind of havoc it could wreak upon my clients color service and the impact it has upon the quality of their outcome.

Let me explain: being extreme and shampooing multiple times just before your appointment is highly unnecessary. However, going 4 or more days is another thing entirely—prior to your appointment. What’s truly recommended is simply cleansing dirty hair the night or day prior to service. This ensures a clean surface on the hair shaft, preparing it for full and thorough product application.

I know we may think that it’s healthier or protective to let the oils remain in dirty hair. This couldn’t be further from the truth because in actuality, you should be using sulfate-free products. When strands are oily or harboring week old built up product, it greatly hinders full saturation of the color service. What you want is hair that is clean, providing a fresh, uniform slate for your stylist to work with. This ensures it is free of anything that could inhibit the coloring molecules from adhering and really penetrating individual strands. Although this fact holds true for all services, some client heed more than others! Those seeking to go lighter for the summer months, it is especially important for you! With cleaner hair, a greater effectiveness of lighteners is experienced and color lifting occurs with ease. Knowing this critical step saves us all from the dreaded result of blotchy highlights or the inability to cover grays!

That being said, there are some anomaly appointments with me, Vinaccia Hair Goddess, here at Bonne Vie Salon that exist. It’s true, these exceptions to debunking are truly enhanced by dirtier tresses. These are for formal styles and many up-do services. So unless you’re only in the chair for a special occasion style, please arrive to your coloring appointment sans dirty hair!

For My Blonde Going Darker Or Returning To Natural

When a natural blonde chooses to dye his or her hair a darker shade or tone, there are a few things one must consider! NEVER use permanent color. Permanent is for the permanent lighting action NOT the color which will fade. If you  are going darker use an alkaline deposit-only color, sometimes called a “demi”. The color will last as long as a permanent but if it fades your natural color is underneath, not an artificial-looking color.

When refreshing ALWAYS use an acid-based color on your mid shaft and ends. If you pull the same color through the ends that you use for root touch ups, you WILL damage and dry your hair. Also, the dye load at the ends of your hair will be darker and ultimately become harder to lift when trying to put in highlights. Hence the dreaded look of darker, flat colored ends and “hot” looking roots.

At some point you WILL want to go back to your natural color. The only way to do that in a controlled, healthy manner is by regular visits consisting of treatments of color-pigment remover. Often times these processes also consist of: FULL-head, heavy highlights, acid-based glosses, deep conditioning treatments and trims to keep the ends healthy.

If you have been doing my suggestions above, you might be able to get back to your natural color in 3 – 4 visits to me! If you’ve been using a box Color, Permanent Hair Color, have been pulling color through to the ends, or are going from Red to blonde, plan on it taking 5 to 6 visits to do this in a safe manner. Otherwise you’ll be looking at a pixie cut in your future because of the damage your hair has sustained from trying to do it all too quickly. The first 2 visits are the worst. Plan on the first visit taking 5 to 6 hours and you may not be extremely happy with the color of your hair. One must remember though, you did this to yourself but it will all be over soon, just stick to the plan!

Stay Sulfate-Free, Don’t Skimp on Hair Basics!

So often I find clients spending so much on hair color but unwilling to spend towards the Shampoo and Conditioner to ensure brightness and shine. Think of your hair as a fragile piece of fabric – once damage is done there is NO going back. Shampoo is your foundation, it needs to be Sulfate-free! Sulfates are cheap salt detergents that break down Color molecules causing them fade quickly. If you are paying less than $10, the ingredients are likely not verified. This leads manufacturing to jump around for the cheapest price, with low quality.

Here’s an analogy… think of steak – there is Ruth Chris Steakhouse or Waffle House. What’s the difference? They’re both Steak right? There’s a tremendous amount of difference in smell, appearance, taste and mouth feel! One is the cheapest meat one can buy, might even be near or over the expiration date. The other is fresh, top quality, carefully chosen and prepared. The same goes for shampoo. The ingredients may be the same but there’s a world of difference when it comes down to it.

I chose to convert my entire Color line to Beth Minardi’s Signature Color some time ago because I firmly believe it will leave my clients hair in better health. It’s double the price of the color line I had before, but I believe in quality when it comes to products being sulfate-free. I want my clients to have the healthiest hair possible, so to me its worth every penny.

I love the product so much that I became an Ambassador for the Minardi Luxury Color Care Line. The Shampoos and Conditioners are nutritionally formulated to deliver the exact Lipids and Proteins your hair has lost during specific Color Services. Whether, Semi/Demi Permanent, Permanent, or High Lift/Lightener Service they will replace what is lost and the results have been amazing!

I would really like for you to try these new products. I have a few sample packets of a few sulfate-free Permanent Shampoos and Conditioners for trial but if you feel like going for the gold, mention this email and I’ll take 20% off all the product I have in stock! Also, my resident salon, Bonne Vie, provides other wonderful sulfate-free products I can introduce to you as well!
